Partition won't restore

Postby borate » Mon Mar 05, 2012 9:49 pm

An IFW image was made from an approx. 57.22 Gb partition, resulting in a 11.9Gb TBI file.
An attempt to restore that image to the very same partition fails: IFW prompts that "the
partition is too small: 69029 MiBs required."

ADDED INFO...

I once again imaged this partition. This time it came in at only 8Gb and could be restored to
the original location. Checking other images (that were created from a different drive and
have been successfully restored to THAT drive's 100G+ partition) I noted that those in the 11G+
range also would not fit this alternate drive, which has two approx. 57 Gb partitions.

I'm missing something basic here...
Why won't images in the 11 Gb+ range restore to a nearly 60G partition...which is especially vexing
considering that the earlier described 11G image was too large for restoration to its original location?

I assume you meant 69029 GiB above, not 69029 MiB

When you got the message that "the partition is too small:
69029 GiBs required.", that indicates that on the original partition
imaged, data existed 69029 GiBs into the partition, and that's what
determines the minimum size for the partitions you're restoring to.
So that would indicate that the original partition imaged was at least
69029 GiB in size.

In other words. it's not strictly the amount of data that determines the
required restore size, but the furthest location into the partition
where data existed on the original partition imaged.

For example, if you have a 100 GiB partition with 10 GiB of data in it,
but because not all data is consolidated from the beginning of the
partition, you have some data located 75 GiB into the partition. In this
case, the image file size would typically be about 6 GiB, but it would
still require a partition at least 75 GiB to restore to.

This KB article covers a lot of information about this general topic,
including the Compact feature in IFW/IFD/IFL that you might find useful:

Thanks, Tom.

I get the drift, and will peruse that article. Yet it still strikes me as counterintuitive
that an image won't restore to the very same partition from which it was made, as it
has so many times in the past - to another drive that had similarly sized partitions.

No, the exact message IFW delivers is "69029 MiBi is required (not Gb).

are you using 2.69?
