IFL log file and validate question?

Post by wvbill »

Hi All,

I am a recent purchaser of IFW, IFL, etc. and have a few questions. Please be patient if these seem basic for expert users.

I have created a IFL boot USB disk on a 4 GB flash drive.

I booted to this and created an image of my entire C drive using "backup unused sectors" for a RAW image.
I also selected "validate" -- not byte by byte.

The task completed successfully and quickly -- I have two questions:

1. It seemed to validate byte by byte, 2 full passes, is this normal even though I only selected "validate"?

2. I selected "Log Results to file" but cannot find a log -- I thought it would be on the boot USB drive -- How do I create a log?

I am very impressed with the speed.

Any help/comments appreciated,

Bill

From page 37 of the IFD manual it should have been placed in same location (on thumb drive) as the IMAGE.EXE is located;

Log Results to File – Select this option to make Image for DOS log the details of the backup operation. Image for DOS saves the log
as IFD.LOG in the IMAGE.EXE program directory. To be able to save IFD.LOG, Image for DOS must be running from a writable medium such
as a non-write-protected floppy diskette. You can use the /logfile or LogFile options to specify an alternate location for IFD.LOG.

Page 89 of that manual gives details for alternate logfile locations.

IFD manual is in \ifd_en_268\ifd_en_manual.pdf

IFL runs from a RAM drive so if you don't save it to an actual drive, it
will be deleted when the system is rebooted. You could use the /email
option to have it emailed afterwards (for the CUI version have to use a IP
address for server).

Corrections;

IFL related.....

Page 34 and page 73 have the info needed regarding log file options.

File name of your IFL manual is......
ifl_en_manual.pdf

Odd that 'RAM drive' doesn't get any mention in that user manual.

Thanks for the help.

Can anyone confirm that when selecting "Validate" in an IFL Cold RAW "sector by sector" Image, you actually get a "Validate Byte by Byte"?

Thanks,

Bill

No, an image validate would be a validate of the target file only, validate
byte-for-byte would be for validate byte-for-byte.

Is there a limit to the command line length with IFL GUI?

I have one computer that runs an auto restore (bootfile method) and sends an email. Another computer with a much longer command line will not even run the restore. I think the error is 61. If I remove the email component of the command line the restore happens.

Forget the above. I tried it again and it worked. My mistake somewhere.
