how to restore luks encrypted partition *unencrypted*?

Post by SuffolkPunch »

Hello,

Can I use IFL v 3.16 to restore a LUKS-encrypted partition to the HD in its unencrypted form?

More details:

My laptop has Linux Mint 17 installed in LUKS encrypted form on an 80GB HD.
Linux 'Disks' reports that the HD has 2 partitions:
MBR0 (sda1): a 255MB bootable Linux partition mounted at /boot (file system ext2)
MBR1 (sda2): an 80GB extended partition (/dev/sda2) LUKS-encrypted with logical volumes (Linux + swap volumes)

Booting the laptop from the ImageforLinux CD, I see the following data on the hard drive:
MBR0 **Active (01)** 243 MiB ext2/3/4
MBR1 partition (02) 76074 MiB Extended
----- volume (02B5) 76074 MiB Linux Native

I then decrypt and mount the LUKS partition using the script /utility/luks-lvm.sh.
Starting an IFL full restore, then shows the following selectable source drives:
/dev/mapper/lvm_pv_mint---vg-root 74MiB
/dev/mapper/lvm_pv_mint--vg-swap-1 2MiB
/dev/mapper/mint-vg
ATA Hitachi

And this is where I don't know what to do! My guess was to backup the vg-root volume and then restore it to the ATA Hitachi HD. That 'ended successfully' according to IFL, *but* upon trying to boot the laptop, BIOS complained 'No OS found'.

Any help/advice would be most gratefully received!

Restore with the option to "set active" and "write std mbr", also you can
mount it on the new drive to check if the files are there. You may be
required to install grub for it to load the kernel (see linux section of the
KB on how to install grub)
