Restoring Image to Virtual Machine - won't boot

I followed the procedure shown in this KB: http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=303
I imaged a Ubuntu system using IFL 3.13.
From Windows 10 host running IFW 313, I created the VMDK as a virtual drive according to the KB
I then I restored the Ubuntu image into the VMDK using IFW.
I created the virtual machine from the VMDK using VirtualBox.

When I run the VM, I get "Error loading operating system".

I can attach an optical drive with an IFL/BING ISO image, and boot into IFL/BING.
BING shows MBR0 Linux Native, MBR1 Extended, and partition ------------ Linux Swap Solaris
MBR0 is active with standard MBR.

What did I miss?

I don't know why the KB procedure didn't work, but I was able to use the Boot Repair disk: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

The VirtualBox ability to mount bootable ISO's is quite handy. From an unbootable VM, I was able to boot BING (didnt' fix), gparted (didn't fix), and finally the Ubuntu boot repair, that worked.

The results indicate the issue was grub was corrupted? Perhaps there is a difference in the IFL-to-VM process in the KB to account for grub?

"=================== Recommended repair
The default repair of the Boot-Repair utility will reinstall the grub2 of sda1 into the MBR of sda.
Additional repair will be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s
Unhide GRUB boot menu in sda1/etc/default/grub
lspci: Unable to load libkmod resources: error -12"

the message is more like the mbr message witch would suggest you don't have
grub installed in the active partition (maybe it was in the original mbr),
so when you restore, you should not use std mbr, but let it restore grub
there (presuming you're restoring entire drive, otherwise you have to ask it
to restore first track).
