IFL boot recovery for W10 image

An external USB hard drive contains an IFW back up image that I want to restore.

A procedure was previously posted on using IFW boot recovery USB to accomplish this, but I cannot locate it.

Kindly outline the steps for me, in simple terms. I assume that the PC will boot from the Linux recovery USB, then allow access to the external hard drive where the back up is located.

Look for a .TBI file on the drive.

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/howto/ has the tutorials

if you used simple operations to create it, use it for restore (ensure
enabled in setting), otherwise don't use it for restore (ensure disabled in
settings).

Thanks Mary, and TB Support. A .tbi file, of course...

But what's not clear is how to boot into Linux from the USB. As I recall, when this was accomplished earlier the PC booted up with the Linux menus shown in the tutorials. Working through the menus eventually led to the desired .tbi image.

This time, after IFL-Create Recovery Boot Disk files were loaded onto the USB stick from the W10 programs menu, the USB booted the PC to the WinRE and reloaded early Windows 10. No IFL menu was seen. Did I copy the wrong IFL files?

borate,

You made a TBWinRE boot disk instead of an IFL boot disk.

Thanks Brian. The USB IFL was apparently okay. Why Windows booted into recovery mode earlier I can't say, but this time I chose the USB in the BIOS and it brought up the Linux interface.

Restore began, but eventually failed, and it deleted the C:\ partition.

So gave it another go. The restore dialog that displayed was...
FROM: external drive's .tbi file (A verified image)
TO: Drive 0 ------ MBR 1 Partition (02) 473961 MiB NTFS. (No drive letter)

The two other small partitions on the target are: D:\recovery drive and SYSTEM, and restore lists an MBR 2 as well, which I assume is the Linux USB fob.

Made it all the way through the restore, but same error:
Partition reduction failed. (1/2/49) The target partition will be deleted.

Third try: enabled the "update MBR" option. Failed as before.

Sure would be nice to get this verified image restored, and not have to go through a tedious native install once agin. ^_^ How do I overcome this?

borate,

Sorry, I misunderstood your boot disk. When you run through the restore steps in IFL, after selecting your .TBI what do you see on the Restore From screen?
Are you restoring the image to the original drive?
What is the name of the final folder that contains the .TBI file?

Hi Brian. Thanks for your time. Here's the full story, as I recall it.

Earlier a Dell Inspiron 3148 laptop was reformatted, and W1607 installed. The size of three partitions wasn't noted then, and may have changed since, but not by much and not intentionally.
After an recent attempt at a fresh install, the RE partition gained a drive letter (D), since removed as you may note in the current layout, below. There were no files in the D:\ directory.

I never had occasion to restore "Win10_Dell_1607.TBI." When 1703 arrived I imaged "Win10_Dell_1703.TBI" - used in these failed attempts.

IFL was on a USB stick; the image was on an external USB hard drive. Surely would seem to be a typical restore. But, as noted, it balked repeatedly. Disappointing.

borate, how did you get that screenshot if the OS doesn't boot? Was it taken prior to the restore?

Still a few questions above to be addressed.

When restore tanked, I rebuilt from the ground up. Great way to waste a weekend. ^_^ The attachment reflects the current status of the drive.
