IFL306a Empyt GPT Ext4 partition backup 30Gb

Post by crubel »

Hello,

I just partitioned a 3TB sata drive on my Linux system, had to use a GPT partition table to
make use of all 3TB of the space. Then formatted it with ext4 and mounted it to my
system to verify it was all ready to go. The drive only has 1 large partition right
now.
Curious to verify that IFL306a would be able to use the GPT disk OK, I decided to
run a quick backup of the empty disk over to another ext4 disk/folder. The empty disk
backup generated a 30Gigabyte TBI backup file??

Issuing a disk usage command on the save mounted disk results in:

du -hs /3TBDATA/
20K /3TBDATA/

only 20K.

So I am just curious how IFL could end up with a 30GB backup file
on an empty disk, when on ext4 file-systems I thought we only
backing up used sectors. Is this what you would be expecting
to see or is there something wrong here that I need to
go back and take a look at.

The only other item about the configuration I would add
is that the 3TB drive is connected externally via a USB3
port, in case that might have anything to do with the
situation.

Is this 30GB of extra backup space going to always be present
on top of the data that will be present on the drive partition
once I start to use it?

Thank you,

there would be a bunch of metadata that makes up the file system itself that
is backed up. F1 details / information button on the partition will show
free/used space.
