Restoring image with Image for Windows unsuccessful

Post by mbytes »

Hello,

I'm attempting to restore an image (.TBI) using Image for Windows but the drive I've restored to is not bootable. On boot of restored disk I get the following error:

Status: 0xc000000e
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

I thought the backed up image was a full-disk backup and that restoring would be simple but it isn't. It's possible that I've created the image incorrectly as I've read in the TeraByte docs that an image of partitions is different than a full disk backup?? I'm unclear on this or if it's relevant.

The imaged drive has the same 3 partitions as the original with the exception that the OS partition on the original shows (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) in Windows Disk Manager but the restored drive only shows (Primary Partition), presumably this is my problem although I thought boot info wasn't in OS partition on Win7?

The OS is Windows 7 Pro and my version of Image for Windows is v2.81.

Attempts to re-image the drive have failed as it has some bad sectors in the Dell recovery partition, this is the reason for the restore of a previously saved image, any guidance would be appreciated. Is it possible to copy boot information from existing disk to newly restored one using Diskpart?

Thanks,
mbytes

All you need to do is an entire drive backup and entire drive restore. You
can tell if it is not full drive if it says "partial" next to the drive when
selecting what to restore. Also with that older version, on full drive
restores, if the "update boot disk" restore option exists, choose that.

You can also at this point just use BCD Edit in BootIt from the boot media.

Thanks for the reply, so I looked at the drive when attempting to do a restore and "partial" is listed next to it so it looks like I didn't do a full backup as previously thought.

Can I recover using this partial image, if so how?

Remember I attempted to re-image the original drive and it failed so an entire drive backup is no longer an option.

I'm considering trying a full image using dd as it will allow the bit-by-bit copy and not stop on error, does Image for Windows have such a feature (skipping/bypassing bad sectors)?

yes, it's still going to just be something like restoring that and using
"update boot partition" (if you're doing this on a different system, ensure
the global option to "assume same target system" is enabled). Did you
backup the C: partition and you still have the small boot partition, then
that's all you do is use the update boot partition. Or as mentioned, use
the bcdedit in BootIt partition work to point it to the partition.
Otherwise of course need to know all the existing partition, what you backed
up (shown in the list), etc..

Thanks for the help I was able to get the drive bootable but I must say that I've used other imaging softare (Acronis) and that didn't require extra steps to get the new drive up and running. With Acronis I imaged, restored and installed the new drive w/o much effort, I could even walk my client through if necessary, the TeraByte image restore is not something my client could have done. I'm considering switching back to Acronis in the future. One thing I will say though is that the BootIT disk does a great job of disk cloning and I may purchase that to have in my arsenal.

mbytes,

I'm glad you've got it working. I've done lots of Entire Drive Backups/Restores. They work first time, no extra steps needed. Please test it out.

All you do is do an entire drive backup and restore (or use simple
operations which that is all you can do).

If you just do partial, then it's up to you to handle the custom restores,
it won't go off modifying things that could break other things without your
permission. In this case, you just needed to tick the update boot partition
option.
