WinPE IFW Usb issues after restart.

Postby okrona » Wed Apr 13, 2016 2:09 am

Hi!

First of all I'd like to explain how I do, and why I do it.

I use WinPE to boot an enviorment on a terminal. A few clever scripts later I get a list of available kernels(images) to install.
After the kernel has been installed (restored) in with imagew.exe I copy in some other softwares, depending on what terminal it is.

The reason I do it like this is because I now only have 20~ something kernels with 6 different softwares. So all in all 26 files. (which 6 is restore images).
Instead of what I would be forced to have if I only used a full image without moving over the software manually. Then I'd have to have 6*20 images instead ~120.

Now to the actual problem. After I've booted, and restored with below parameters. When it reboots(rb:2), no USB ports are working. And I have to do an additional restart(in my case, turning off PSU then on again) for it to start working.
x:\IFW\imagew.exe /nousbpwrfix /r /o /x /d:0 /f:"D:\images\%ImageName%" /rb:2
I've tried without the nousbpwrfix but it only slows down my installation process with about 10 seconds. No other difference.

Do I have to do some magical USB controller hiders?

Best regards,

What WinPE version and build type are you using? Have you tried a different one (may have different drivers)? Is this happening on every system or just certain ones?

After the restore, what are you rebooting to (back into WinPE, restored kernel, etc.)? Do the USB ports work if you boot to something else?

Do you see the same issue if you use IFL to restore?

Latest and greatest. Windows 8.1 ADK build winPE. No specific drivers installed, usb keyboard works straight of the bat in winPE. When Imagew.exe restarts after the restore is made it boots up to the restored image, a windows 7 embedded or a win xp embedded.

IFL = Image for Linux? Havn't tried it. Only used IFD with a windows 98 boot stick before to be able to do basicly the same I want to do now. (But want some new features that are available in winPE)
The only way I've gotten the USB to work after the reboot is by restarting the computer(psu on/off) again.

edit:
I want to keep using winPE if possible since we're building a graphical interface which will launch with winPE which you choose what image/kernel combo to restore with imagew.exe, all this with touch function.

I would try the other WinPE versions and see if one works better (Windows 7 PE, Windows 8.0 PE, and Windows 10 PE). If the older versions lack the features you need you can still try Windows 10 PE, which has updated drivers and features compared to 8.1.

Also, what happens if you boot to WinPE after you have the restored system working? For example, you boot to WinPE and do the restore and then reboot to the restored system (no USB), then power down and power back up to enable USB support. At this point, if you boot to WinPE (don't do another restore) and then reboot back to the restored system, does USB work?

Hi!

You are indeed correct.

It's an issue with the winPE itself. Tried to make a wpeutils reboot and it resulted with broken USB after the reboot aswell. Sorry for time spent</3. Thanks for helping me identify the real problem <3 - Going to try winpe 10.
