Unable to write data to file

After writing ifw images to P:\ for several years, suddenly ifw will not complete writing data to file on P:\ image storage partition.
Read the KB document. Made adjustments. No success.
Will write to F:\ and can move ifw file to P:\
What might be the issue with P:\?
Might reformatting the partition resolve the problem?
