Blinking cursor on black screen

Post by Ed Smith »

Used IFL (GUI) version 2.97e to restore an image. The image restored but on
boot goes past HP splash screen then to a blinking cursor in top left on a
black screen.

Had Windows 10 installed upgraded from Windows 7. It became unstable and
wanted to return to Windows 7 that I had a image of before doing Windows 10
upgrade.

It restored successfully but then the blinking cursor.

Any info on what can be done? I tried in BareMetal to make the other
partitions active but didn't help so put back as was with System 100 MiB as
active.
Tried in BIOS to go from AHCI to IDE and no help. Went back AHCI.
Also made sure nothing else was plugged in or connected.

BareMetal shows in partition work:

GPT Partitions:

System Partition 100 MiB
OS Partition 1418738 MiB
- - - - - Partition 11960 Free Space

The free space must have been where in the past the HP Factory Recovery was.
Deleted that partition before this image was made.

Thanks for any info,
Ed.

Ed,

Did you do an Entire Drive restore of the Win7 image? Or partition restores? I doubt you should be seeing GPT partitions.

do an entire drive restore. If you don't have an entire drive backup then
ensure you restore using a standard mbr .. use the write standard mbr code
option on restore.

You can also use BIBM view mbr, option to install the w7 mbr, and apply
that.

also, remove any devices you may have added (usb typically, cameras, ipod,
cd, etc..) , sometimes the bios is waiting for it and hangs.

Thanks to all the have replied. I got it going now.
The image I was restoring had that Partition of 11960 Free Space.
Since it installed and didn't boot, I used BareMetal Partition Work and then
deleted that partition.
Then resized the OS partition of 1418738 MiB adding that 11960 free space
to it for a max of 1430698.

It now boots. Don't know if that made it work or not but glad it's working.

Again thanks for all that gave all those tips and saved them for future use.

Ed.
