HP 4540 USB HD Problems

Post by DELTA624826 »

HP 4540 laptop will not recognize USB external HD
If both BootIt USB and external attached, locks up on Esc and f9 (boot order)
If only BootIt, screen locks when you try to attach external (AFTER BootIt loads)
Used CD to boot, screen locks when you try to attach external (AFTER BootIt loads)
Legacy boot. Fast boot inhibited.

I know it's not the software. Looking for a "WORK AROUND" for this HP.
Can I control the program without a cursor?

?

Try disabling legacy USB support or if you want imaging, try using Image for
Linux boot disk which doesn't use the BIOS.

or check for a BIOS update as well.

Also give it time. If you can use keyboard, you can do it using the
keyboard instead of mouse.

I downloaded the Image for LINUX (GUI). It works as advertised with no problems.
I had been trying to Image from the BootIt menu. I created an Image for DOS only disc. That also failed. NOTHING on the keyboard nor mouse pad was functional.

Image for LINUX functions well. It even does an orderly shut down when you hit the power key (How come MS can't?- rhetorical question) Mouse pad is operational.
Only quirk is that it requires both power cord and battery removal to boot the next time. This also happened when it failed the other routines.
I will order a PAID copy of Image for Linux..

You panic the first time when it hangs in boot. After that, you go through the motions.

Thank you for your time. Grandchildren in college are known for breaking things. At least we can recover from a HD failure!

Mark problem as SOLVED.
