restoring partition to smaller partition

Post by krum09 »

I am trying to restore a partition to a smaller partition.

I dont get these options with PE50. and IFW 2.88

Image for Windows User Manual Page 94 of 216

Image for Windows Restore Options
During the restore process, you can set a variety of options. These options will vary
depending on whether you are restoring a full drive image or a partition image.
Options available when restoring a partition are shown in the figure below.

Resize After Restore – Currently available only for FAT, FAT32, NTFS, and EXT
2/3/4 partitions, you can use this text box to specify a new size for the restored
partition, bound by the Minimum and Maximum values specified by Image for
Windows. The units used here are mebibytes, abbreviated MiB. (Please refer to the
section titled Data Storage Size Unit Conventions at the beginning of this manual
for more information.)

Can you provide more details?

The option is shown if restoring a single partition with only the partition selected or the image is a partial with a single partition.

I have 3 Partitions on HDD-0,
HDD-0 Partition 1 BootIT BM SZ 150Meg Fat16
HDD-0 Partition 2 NTFS Windows SZ 200Meg
HDD-0 Partition 3 NTFS Windows SZ 700Meg

Created a Partition Image. from HDD-0-3, Base Image windows; that Partition Image Size 7.8g Total size used on Disk 10g, out of 700meg.
I went to restore HDD-0-3 to HDD-0-2, It says I need 560meg more meg in order to restore to that partition. Using IFW PE50 Ver 2.88.

Tried it with and Older Version PE40 IFW 2.81 it all works I get the what was stated in the manual able to check for active partition, and change the size, but with version 2.88 I don't see those options.
I can send you screen captures if you would like.

Your partition sizes don't look right. It may help to see screenshots.

When you're selecting the partition to restore, if you highlight it and click the "Information" button what does it show?

Here are my partition setups;
125MB is my bootit BM
150.00 GB is windows 7 Games
446.05 GB is Windows 7 Apps applications

I can image back and forth, no problems, I don't understand why it doesn't look right, are you thinking of the system reserved partition ?
I can write a tutorial, I have it merged into the same boot drive either apps or games.

So If I take win7 apps and try to restore it to games with version 2.81 it worked, to smaller partition, with 2.88 I don't see those options

Because of the sizes you posted for the partitions.

That shouldn't cause any problems.

Have you tried using the Compact option on the apps partition to move the data down a bit?

When you're going through the steps to restore the image and you're on the screen where you'd check the partition to restore, highlight the partition and click the "Information" button. What does it show? It is also saying @560MiB more space needed? What does 2.81 show?
