I used Thunderbird to access the old newsgroups. Now I have some
problems in setting up a new account for the new newsgroups using port 1199.
Tbird won't allow more than one account with the same server, so I
renamed the server for the old account (port 1198) to a fictional
terabyteunlimited.com.old which allows me to set up the new account
using port 1199. Fine.
But I now can't even look at the old messages for the old account since
Tbird objects and says "Failed to connect to server
terabyteunlimited.com.old". Any ideas?

don't use that one so other may know, but perhaps setting it up using
www.terabyteunlimited.com and terabyteunlimited.com would be treated differently?

Yep, that works. Thanks.

.... and for interest I posted the original message and this reply using
the Thunderbird newsgroup and the above reply using the web, so both are
equally usable without any fuss.

What version of TB are you using? Glad to know it is working on both goups, though
I have 5 and just noticed was 6 released.
I haven't gotten 6 yet since I am not sure Lightning will work.

I tied to add new newsgroup @ 1199 and so far it has not worked. I named one www and the other straight Terabyteunlimited as suggested above.
As stated above I am using TB 5 and want to get TB 6 if I can use it for what I want.
I think in my case it is a password problem so emailed David separately.

You're way ahead of me. I use version 3.1.12 but I'm using Linux Mint
not Windows. There aren't any odd settings, just the default ones I used
for the original terabyteunlimited.com with the appropriate port number.
