Windows 7 0x0000007b boot error after copy

Post by walkabouttigger »

I have a Windows 7 laptop. I used IFL to Copy the drive from a 320GB Seagate drive to a 240 GB Intel SSD. The laptop will not, however, boot from the SSD. It gets to the swirling Starting Windows period but the BSoD appears with 0x0000007b error. If I install Windows 7 from scratch on the SSD, it works fine. Placing the Seagate drive back in the laptop works fine. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Are both drives using the same controller mode? Are you running in AHCI mode? Some SSD drives require AHCI to function properly.

The laptop is configured in AHCI mode.
The laptop is a late model HP EliteBook 8540W Mobile Workstation, in the event it makes any difference. The SSD has the latest Intel firmware. The laptop has the latest firmware and BIOS.

7b is inaccessible boot device - windows can't find it - either no storage
controller, or it ran out of memory, or windows doesn't like where it's
attached, or you have one of the SSD's that cause that error in Windows and
needs a firmware update (even though it's the latest).

If you're going to hook up both drives at the same time on a reboot (or hot
swap) then when copying using the change disk id and guids option. Also,
you may want to send a partinfo (free downloads) listing.

What was the size of the Win7 partition on the 320 GB HD? How much data does it contain?

Cause:

This is a Windows configuration issue, most commonly an incorrect storage driver is being used.

Solution:

Make sure Windows is using the correct storage controller driver.

Error received when installing Windows:

Download the current storage controller drivers for your motherboard from the manufacturer's website. Make sure to use the correct drivers for the controller's mode. For example, many boards require the RAID drivers to be used if any of the connected drives are configured in RAID mode. Using the AHCI drivers when RAID mode is enabled can cause this error (even if the drives are not in a RAID setup).

Error received when attempting to boot from a partition that was moved from another Windows XP computer:

Use the Terabyte OS Deployment Tool to install the proper drivers. Click here for more information. Note: The link provided is for the trial version download. The full (purchased) version is not required to install the drivers.

Going from a 320GB drive to a 240 GB drive can be dangerous.
-Reduce the size of your partitions before you copy them to the new drive.
-Insure that all partitions, including hidden ones, are under 240gb in total size .
-Insure that the reduced sized partitions boot on the original drive.
-Copy all partitions to the new drive, and attempt to boot. Note: Partitions must be placed on the new drive in the same order and partition number as the original. (Hp can have tools partitions in odd locations, Windows too.)

If you have BIBM installed, use the VIEW MBR feature to check and verify the order locations/numbers of the partitions. After the new drive is operational, you can move things and adjust sizes again. For more detailed information see "Restoring to a Smaller Drive or Partition" in IFD/IFL/IFW manuals
Good Luck.

You would just run chkdsk /f on all your partitions to ensure clean.

Use Image for DOS/Linux/Windows to copy the "entire drive" to the new drive
using "scale to fit". If it doesn't fit, you need to compact some of them
using the "compact" option which is available where you select what to copy
(highlight partition, compact to a small enough size so when you do the copy
nothing is in the way, I wouldn't compact to the minimum value since that
would just waste time).

If you keep getting a blue screen of death when trying to boot the Windows OS CD/DVD and you are sure that your computer and the drives are working, enabled and connected, then this may be your problem.

1. On start up (Dell logo), press F2 to enter BIOS

2. Expand the "Drives" section

3. Go to "SATA Operation"

4. Change this from "RAID Auto/AHCI" to "RAID Auto/ATA"
