Recovering files from damaged drive

I have a damaged d: drive, c: is okay. Winxp can't read the drive at all, it shows it as healthy 100% free, no file system listed, and windows explorer gives an IO error on it. Bing1.85 can show me the files on the drive, and edit text files. It must be accessing the drive in a way that windows can't. I know Bing can't recover files, but is there any recovery software I can boot that will let me copy individual files from the damaged drive to the working c: drive?

you could create an image backup, use tbiview.

Although I'd upgrade to BIBM.

Try making a Puppy Linux bootable flash drive. That may have luck reading the drive. You don't need any Linux experience and a web search will give all the details.
Windows PE recovery will boot up, but it's a pain to make and I don't see why that would do better than the installed windows system. The backup and tbiview is also a good try, but that Puppy flash drive (or cd) is well worth having. You might even like Linux!!
