Bootable ISO from Removable Media

A new Dell latitude purchased at work came with the need to create your own recovery and win7 disks... Alas, but the Dell didn't come with a DVD-R only a ROM. Dell's software didn't seem to know this however, but did give the option of saving the image off to a removable disk. But rather than let a 3G image steal a 1TB drive.. I'm in search of how to take this drive and MAKE a bootable ISO from it. However all the tools I have at my disposal at the moment appear to only be able to make ISO images from Optical disks!! Ugh... Searching on Google is like self-flagellation these days.... with [bootable iso from usb folders] as terms, the only results reverse the issue on how to make a bootable usb from an iso... gone are the days when we used to control the search a bit, as all my control attampts seem to be ripped away as Google is obviously smarter than I am and even seems to know just how I want to be touched! :)

Anyway, if anyone can shed some light on how/what tool to use to create a bootable iso NOT from a CD/DVD/etc.... but from any removable media, hell, even from a directory and set of sub-dirs. I'm not seeing this one...

Many thanks,

/j

I have a DVD drive in an external case. Should not cost more
than about $50-60 to do.

You can also get a laptop-type drive already in a case if
size is important. If not, full size drives usually offer
more speed.

Have you contacted Dell itself? I am sure you are not the
only one with this question.

Fortunately, Acer put in a recordable drive, thank heaven.

I have had great success with UltraISO to make bootable CD's and DVD's. It can create virtual drives as well. http://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso/main.htm

1. After installing, open the ISO in UltraISO from the File menu.
2. Select, write the disk image from the Boot Menu. Be sure, you select the correct drive for your flash drive.
3. After the image has been written to your flash drive, select the Xpress Boot option.
4. Then select Write New Drive Boot Sector and then select Windows Vista / 7.

Once that is complete, your flash drive should be bootable. Once tested, you can convert the flash drive to NTFS under Windows and select the UltraISO's Xpress Boot option and perform step 4 again, above.

Let me know if you have any questions or problems.

Good Luck,
Rich
