upgrade Win7 to Win8 Consumer Preview

Mon May 21, 2012 7:03 am

I have a PC that doesn't have any data on it that I actually care about. It currently dual-boots between Win7 Pro and Ubuntu 12.04.

If I want to upgrade the Windows installation to the Win8 Consumer Preview, what do I need to be aware of? I see the warnings about Win8 on here, but I wouldn't have any other NTFS partitions to worry about. How do I re-enable BING?

Thanks

You can also create an image of the Win 7 Pro BEFORE you
install Win 8 in case you change your mind.

OK, I went on and did it. I didn't even have to reenable it, that part went fine.

But I did have issues in that I can no longer boot into Ubuntu, just get a flashing cursor in the upper-left side of the screen. I did have to resize things because the Win7 partition didn't have enough space for the upgrade. So here's the current partition layout followed by what I did.

So there was the two partitions for Win7 (initially only Win7 was on this box), the partition for BIBM -- I just call it BING because I talk out loud to myself while typing & it's easier to say :). I then a while back created an extended partition for Ubuntu, and It had two partitions within it -- one for Linux swap, one for ext4 Ubuntu root.

So I:
1) resized the Ubuntu root partition, made it quite a bit smaller
2) resized the extended partition a corresponding amount
3) did a 'slide' to put the new free space immediately in front of the Windows 7 main partition
4) resized the Win7 main partition to consume all that free space

So I should have ended up exactly where I started, just different sizes. Not sure where I went wrong... I will edit this to add the BIBM settings in a few minutes.

BIBM v.1.08 settings:

General:
============
Limit Primaries
Use Volume Label
BootNow Support
Keep HD Active
Use HD0 in FAT BPB
Make HD0 Active

Global Geometry and Alignment:
=============================
Align on 2048 Sectors
Align on Cylinders
Validate Geometry Before Use
Align MBR for BIOS Auto Mode

and for the Ubuntu menu item, no options are checked. Only 'Default' is checked for the Win8 menu item.

appears I just screwed up & need to reinstall Grub2 per the KB article. I may just install Unbuntu 64-bit since it was 32.
