try image for linux, that will take out the BIOS factor, and linux disk
access methods and caching may help. backing up to the same drive would be
slower than to another drive. When backing up to the same drive it has to
jump around more for reads/writes and some drives do better with seeks /
jumping around on the disk than others.

No, other partition of the same HDD.

I am using IFW within Windows most of the time now. I don't
know how long IFD/IFL would take.

The image to D: I just ran took 13.5 minutes to complete.
Even with an I-5 CPU and 6 GB of RAM, that is excellent.

Use CCleaner before you do image. It has removed some extra
stuff that Windows cleanup has missed on my computer without
even cleaning the registry. The first time I ran it there
was a HUGE amount it removed.

Does the target partition's file system can influence IFL speed? That is - does creating an image on ext2 partition will be quicker than on NTFS partition?

it can ... but it depends on fragmentation ... the efficiency of the file
system and driver... etc..

Ok,

it seems that max speed I can get is 28-29 MB/sec and I get such results in IFW and IFL (writing to an ext3 partition).
IFD/IFL (writing to an NTFS partition) give me ca 20 MB/sec.
There are no significant differences when writing on the same HDD or on separate drive.

Thx all for help.
