now i want to boot from that drive to test the restore. so far i can't get
my laptop to boot from the external drive. i've made sure that the system
partition of the restored drive is "Active" and so on. when rebooting i
make sure that the BIOS boot order is set for booting from USB. still, the
external drive is just ignored and the computer boots from the internal
drive as usual. if anyone can tell me how to make this work (using BootIt
BM?) i would be very grateful.

May or may not be helpful to you, but have a good look round the BIOS
settings in case you have to set up in more than one area.

I recall one computer I was looking after which had one place to set boot
priority, and another place where you had to select between something
called normal boot and advanced boot (or something of the sort).

For that computer, just changing the boot priority didn't result in booting
from USB, until the advanced boot setting was done.

Also, (you probably did this anyway) I guess you would need to have the
external USB HDD plugged in before changing the BIOS settings?

Hi!

While your PC starts - look at the screen and search for a message similar to "Press F4 for Boot Menu". My PC does NOT boot from USB - even if I choose apropriate settings in BIOS. I have to bring advanced boot menu by pressing F4 - and than choose the device I want to boot from.

That and have the external drive connected AND powered up BEFORE booting the PC.

Most of my PCs have different keys; I have one that uses F8, one F11 and another F12. Yet another has to have this facility enabled in the BIOS befrore it is active - and before a message shows.

I love these advanced boot menus, much more versatile than having to decide boot order in the BIOS.
