Clone Drive: Drive Letter Assignment

I want to transfer all the partitions on one drive (hd0) to a new, bigger drive, which I can put in an external drive for the copying process. Hd0 has the EMBR. I also have hd1, which has a copy of Win XP which I am currently booting Win from. After copying I am going to replace hd0 with the new drive, put the former hd0 in the external drive, wipe it, and use it for storage. My question is, what will I have to do to end up with the new hd0 having all partitions/logical drives assigned the corresponding old drive letters that were used on the original hd0?

Bill, there won't be a problem with your drive letters. The booted OS assigns the drive letters and you will have the same WinXP (and any other OS on HD0 will be cloned). How are you planning to do it? Copy or image/restore?

Thanks, Brian, for the reply. I am going to restore it because the new drive is 100 Gb larger than the old. I would also like to eliminate two or three logical drives by deleting them. I am hoping I can keep the same drive letter for the current G partition, but delete logical drives E & F. I used to install my applications to a separate logical drive from my Windows/primary partition, but I stopped doing that the last time I installed everything from scratch.

Bill, even if your drive letter does change you can easily make it G: again in Disk Management.

I have three hard disks and will be getting more and larger ones when
the prices come down. I actually name my partitions with the drive
letters that I want them to have so that they can be given the same
letters in all OSs. The names also show up in other OSs so a D in
windows shows up the same in Linux.

Dr. Teeth, I like your idea. Each of my current hdd has a primary partition with Win in it. Each is hidden when the other is used, so I suppose I could name them both C. Right now, one is assigned C and the other M. Once when I wanted to be able to access M while C was being used, I un-hid it. If that situation ever comes up again, I imagine I could just assign a different drive letter for it then.

Brian, having looked at the Copy/Wipe manual, I think I will use it to do the transfer.
