Unable to create BIBM v1.31f UFD using makedisk

I have a new HP Pavilion laptop with Win10 pre-installed. It is of course using UEFI. In order to boot a BIBM UFD apparently it must be created as a UEFI System Partition (USB Layout for the UFD). However, makedisk does not give that option even though this knowledge base article says it should - http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=317

I have disabled Secure Boot and enabled Legacy mode (but no 'disable UEFI' is offered) - then created a BIBM UFD as a 'Normal - Raw Boot image' but that is not recognized a boot device when restarting my system.

Why is makedisk not offering the option to create a UEFI System Partition?

Am I missing something? All comments/suggestions welcome. TIA, Rob

Rob,

I just make the BIBM UFD using default settings. (Partition - MBR FAT/FAT32 Partition) It works if you use the following Legacy UEFI/BIOS settings....

BIBM can only boot in Legacy mode (UEFI mode is not supported). The BIOS would need to support Legacy booting and have it enabled. The UFD would normally be created using one of the "Partition - MBR FAT/FAT32 Partition" options.

Depending on the BIOS you may need to adjust the boot order (with the BIBM UFD connected) so it boots first. If there's an option to boot Legacy first that may also help. It can sometimes be easier to use the BIOS boot menu instead if it has one (e.g. press F8 or F12 on boot-up and select the non-UEFI entry for the BIBM UFD).

Thanks Brian. Yes, I read that article previously - especially this: "BootIt Bare Metal will not boot on UEFI systems configured in UEFI mode. To boot on these systems Secure Boot must be disabled and you must enable or use Legacy mode."

I did exactly that but BIOS does not recognize the BIBM UFD and instead always boots Win10 on my HDD. That is the problem. I also moved 'USB' to the top of the boot order for both UEFI mode and Legacy mode.

I fear BIBM will not work on my PC - period. In the BIOS settings the description for 'Legacy Support' states the following: "When Legacy Support is enabled, UEFI boot order and Legacy boot order are both available and UEFI boot order has higher priority than Legacy boot order".

Thus, since my HDD is UEFI, the BIOS always boots the Win10 partition regardless if a bootable Legacy UFD is installed. In other words (as I understand), if any UEFI device is attached to my system, it will always be booted regardless of the Legacy boot order and the presence of a Legacy bootable device.

Again, why can't makedisk create a BIBM UEFI bootable UFD?

Thank you Paul.

So, why doesn't BIBM support UEFI mode?

I have 'Legacy Support' enabled in my BIOS. It states the following: "When Legacy Support is enabled, UEFI boot order and Legacy boot order are both available and UEFI boot order has higher priority than Legacy boot order". There is no "boot in legacy mode" option - only "legacy support" enabled. Apparently, "legacy support" is not the same as "boot in legacy mode".

The boot device menu does not show the BIBM UFD - so cannot select it for booting.

I'm beginning to think BIBM will not work with my BIOS.

Rob,

There is another setting in your BIOS that could be needed. CSM (Compatibility Support Module). Make sure it is Enabled.
Instead of using the Boot Order, use the Boot Menu. You will see 2 entries for your USB flash drive...

USB
UEFI USB

...choose USB and it should work. Choose UEFI USB and it won't work.

Regarding Legacy Boot. My BIOS has a Secure Boot choice. I click it and see OS Type. I click that and see Windows UEFI mode and Other OS. "Other OS" is the Legacy boot mode.

Hello,

See http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=572

If you want to do imaging, use the Image products and not BIBM.

You may want to try "partition" mode as well, but always use the bios boot key to select the boot device, so you can tell if it's listed. Your system must support booting in normal (legacy) mode for booting BIBM. As the article shows, you can boot IFL/IFW using UEFI. IFL GUI full version includes partwork on it (using the BIBM key).

Thanks to all who replied to my post.

Finally succeeded with a boot of BIBM from UFD. Just followed the suggestions given in this thread and it worked!

However, was not able to install BIBM on my HDD. I resized the partition at the end to make available 8mb for BIBM but received some sort of error when trying to install - unfortunately I don't recall the exact problem or the error message. No matter, I'm quite happy being able to boot BIBM from UFD. After all, now that my partitions are allocated I'll seldom need BIBM.

Rob, that's good news.

BIBM can't be installed on a GPT disk. Just use it from the USB flash drive when needed. As TeraByte Support mentioned, you can boot an IFL UFD in UEFI mode (no BIOS changes needed) and use Partition Work. That is very convenient.
