Unless HP has boot media, there won't be any unless it might be possible
to get an ISO from MS that could be used.

Not sure the OEM install code would work, either.

Some updating from Win 8 to 8.1 via MS were told it is a retail version
& their OEM codes did not work.

Brian,

Not if all it comes with is a 'recovery' partition, like Lenova
laptops.

Hows about another HDD for new PC, pop out what it comes with, and install
Win 7 on spare.

That way you could esily restore to stock.

-OR-

Do they have a business devision?

Those sometimes offer Win 7 pre-installed.

There are fully legal sources for a Win 8.1 ISO. And many more illegal
ones, natch.

Personally, if I have a licence for an OS - I will get my installation
media from anyplace I can.

Be careful with getting from others. It could be "doctored"

I have never come across a bad copy in all my years of using
unofficial sources.

MJ,

A possible solution for media. There are two listings currently on eBay for HP Windows 8 Pro DVD's. They appear to be 8.0 and not 8.1.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RAM-1GB-w-NEW-H ... 3f2f04a3d7
http://www.ebay.com/itm/RAM-512-MB-w-NE ... 3cdaef29ac

To my understanding, the OEM DVD's will get the Windows 8 key from the bios, when installing, provided the unit shipped with Windows 8 installed, otherwise, they will revert to retail versions, if the system did not ship with Windows 8.

This would be a clean install, instead of all the preinstalled stuff from the recovery partition, if it has one.

The main item of concern, how will the Win 8.0 DVD handle a 8.1 key in the bios, during the install? This would be interesting. A quick search didn't come up with anything. May need to check out the HP forums.

Good luck,

MJ,

According to the link, below from HP, you can download the Win 8 DVD, en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso. This is a retail DVD, not OEM.
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-O ... -p/3176831 references the link below.

The Windows 8.1 DVD is, en_windows_8_1_x64_dvd_2707217.iso. This is also a retail DVD, not OEM.

I ordered an Acer V3 laptop yesterday from Tiger Direct that has Win 7
Home Premium already installed. I liked its specs as well as 7.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Mary

I hope you enjoy it.

I have windows 8.1 on only one of my PCs. As soon as I had it set up
as I liked it, I had a version of Win 7 that sucked big time. There is
so much to dislike about it and nothing to like.
