Spot on.

The link I posted explains it. The primary partitions are numbered first and the volume is numbered last. So the volume in the Extended partition would be partition(4). ie 1, 4, 2, 3

Well, I'd read KB 159 well before I posted my OP (as my OP states), and many times after that, but the key point is that KB 159 shows merely EXAMPLE partition lists and gives absolutely ZERO information on how a SPECIFIC user would evaluate his OWN specific situation and how to examine his OWN specific partition list, particularly since different tools show completely DIFFERENT partition orders. I guess my 30+ years as a systems and real-time (non-PC) simply leaves me far too stupid to understand such things... :|

Moving on, I figured out why Brian and myself got different results from setwindl.tbs. With the help of "tbscript_en_manual.pdf" (the scripting language reference manual), I better understand that script, and it turns out that whether or not the script will permit one to assign or change a drive letter for the system partition depends on the operating context; i.e., whether one runs the script from within BIBM at boot time or not.

Ambertus,

Is WinXP booting?

I have a question about...

"I copied my SCSI-320 RAID boot partition to a Sil-3124 SATA RAID boot partition so that I could disconnect the SCSI-320 drives."

Which software did you use? Did you copy into a partition or into Unallocated Free Space?
