Installation of Win9x/ME Requires a Primary Partition
The Windows 9x/ME boot files must (normally) be located in a primary partition on the first hard drive (HD0). The bulk of the OS can be installed on any drive, including extended partition volumes.
Installation of the boot files to a non-primary partition is outside the scope of this article and should only be attempted by those skilled enough to not need this article.
For information on how to install Win9x/ME completely to another hard drive when using BootIt Bare Metal please see How to Completely Install Win9x/ME to an Alternate Hard Drive.
